Privacy policy
This policy explains which personal data TURBOMOLE GmbH processes when you use www.turbomole.org, why, and what rights you have. We keep it short because the site collects little: no analytics, no advertising, no tracking.

What happens when you visit this site
- Our web server records technical access data (server log files), see below.
- If you write to us, we process what you send us.
- Your privacy choice is stored in your browser, and we keep a pseudonymous record of it without your IP address.
- YouTube videos load only if you allow it.
- Fonts, images and scripts are served from our own server. The site does not contact Google Fonts or any other third party while you browse.
Hosting and server log files
The site is hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH, Industriestr. 25, 91710 Gunzenhausen, Germany, on servers in Germany. Hetzner processes these data on our behalf, under a data processing agreement in accordance with Art. 28 GDPR, and only within the EU/EEA.
When you open a page, the server automatically records: IP address, date and time, the page requested, the HTTP status, the amount of data transferred, the referring page and your browser's user-agent string. We need this to deliver the site and to detect and fix errors and attacks. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in a secure, working website). The log files are deleted automatically after 14 days.
Contact by e-mail and contact forms
If you write to us by e-mail or use the contact or quote form, we process the data you give us — for the forms: name, e-mail address, message and, for a quote, title, affiliation, country and type of organisation — to answer your enquiry. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your enquiry concerns a licence or contract, otherwise Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (answering enquiries). We delete the data when your request is settled, unless statutory retention periods (e.g. for commercial correspondence) require us to keep it.
To keep the forms free of spam without third-party services, we use a hidden field, a time stamp signed by our server, a minimum filling time, a check for short links and a limit of a few messages per hour. When a page with a form opens, your browser fetches the time stamp from our server; it contains only the time and a signature, no personal data. For that limit the server stores a keyed one-way code (HMAC) derived from your IP address and the current date — never the IP address itself; the key is kept secret on our server — and deletes it after two days. These codes are pseudonymous data. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (protection against abuse).
If sending fails, the page keeps your entries in your browser's session storage so that you do not have to type them again. They never leave your browser this way, and they are deleted when you close the tab or once the message has been sent.
Your privacy settings
The first time you visit, we ask whether YouTube videos may be loaded. Your choice is stored in your browser's local storage (entry tm-consent: your choice, a random identifier and the time). This is strictly necessary to respect your choice (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). You can change it at any time via “Privacy settings” at the bottom of every page, or delete it in your browser.
To document consent (Art. 7(1) GDPR), our server records each decision — in the banner, in the privacy settings, and each time you load a single video — with the random identifier, the time, the choice, whether it was for one video only, and the page. It stores no IP address or other information about you; the random identifier makes these records pseudonymous data. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR. These records are kept for three years and then deleted.
YouTube videos
Our video tutorials are hosted on YouTube, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. The videos are not loaded until you click “Load video” (for that one video) or allow YouTube in the banner or the privacy settings (for all videos); before that, only a still image from our own server is shown. We embed videos in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com).
Once a video is loaded, your browser connects to Google's servers. Google receives at least your IP address, the page you are on and technical information about your device, and YouTube may store cookies or similar data on your device. Data may also be processed by Google LLC in the USA; Google LLC is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, § 25(1) TDDDG), which you can withdraw at any time in the privacy settings. Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy (opens in a new tab).
Links to other sites
This site links to other TURBOMOLE sites — the online manual, the store, the download center, the users forum, the basis-set library, riper tools — and to external sites such as LinkedIn, X and publishers. These are plain links: no data is sent to them unless you click, and the operator of the linked site is then responsible for processing there.
Your rights
You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw a consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3)). To exercise these rights, write to contact [at] turbomole.org.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, for example the one responsible for us: Der Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit Baden-Württemberg, Lautenschlagerstraße 20, 70173 Stuttgart, baden-wuerttemberg.datenschutz.de (opens in a new tab).
Security
All pages are delivered over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). We do not use automated decision-making or profiling.
